Just a real quick post (rather than a real tutorial) about the code you need to add to your e.g. /etc/network.d/home file to be able to connect to a wireless network with wpa/wpa2 enryption and dhcp activated using netcfg:
CONNECTION="wireless"
INTERFACE=wlan0
SECURITY="wpa-configsection"
ESSID="wlan-name"
IP="dhcp"
GATEWAY=192.168.1.1
USEWPA="yes"
CONFIGSECTION='
ssid="wlan-name"
psk="passphrase"'
If the router is set to a static IP, you need to change IP="dhcp" to IP="static" and add the following two lanes of code above your configsection part:
DNS1=192.168.1.1
IFOPTS="192.168.1.xx netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255"
Edit the IP and the other stuff to your needs and everything should work out fine!
See the archlinux.org news entry for some more information!

General Boot Buying Guide
First of all you should know that boots are probably the most important thing of your whole setup. Therefore this part of your equip should be the last thing to save money on.
For boots, it’s all about comfort and feel. Buying some, you have to wear them for a while, at least for around 20minutes (do not just slip in and buy if it fits) before taking them home!
Most shops nowadays also offer the possibility of taking the shoes home with you, wear it for some hours in your room and return it for full money-refund during the next 14 days if they are not fitting. If you get that offer- take it!
Boot brands, be it Nitro, Vans, K2, Salomon, Burton or any other, mostly have one ‘line’ of boots which means that it might happen that (almost) all models of one brand are totally failing on you, boots from some other brand fit like perfect. Reading this you should be already noticing that buying after brand and not after comfort can almost only be the wrong decision.
A wrong boot often results in major pain in your feet and legs and can ruin a whole otherwise great season.

As I am using my Latitude E4300 for almost 3 months now, I decided to write a post review to point out how it really is, working with the E4300.
As you might have read here on my blog, I successfully installed Archlinux on it (see the “Publications” section for some tutorials or search the blog for the “latitude” tag).
After configuring Powerdevil (power management) and cpufreq (as the name says: cpu clocking), the E4300 is really stocked well now. The standard cpu-clock is 800MHz each core which is way enough for just browsing and doing some office work.
I did not yet manage to get “suspend to disk” or “suspend to ram” working but this is mostly due to lack of time to deal with it.
What is a great thing to mention is that the HDD issues are “almost” solved with Linux running on it. At least the frequent disk access lowered to around 1/20sec which is definitly not as annoying as 1/2sec !
Since some days, I am using my external 22″ Flatscreen monitor and my external mouse/keyboard again- just due to the comfort of having a bigger screen and some bigger keyboard. Still, I was quite comfortable with the E4300’s keyboard and touchpad (which I also configured, see this post).
So I got to say I am rather happy with my E4300 now that Arch is up and running! Some of the “old” issues got obliterated, the former pros are still valid.
If you got any questions concerning the E4300 and Linux, feel free to comment on any post concerning this topic.

I just got my sound working after several hours of trying. To save you time and trouble, here goes a tutorial on that:
Install alsa-utils and alsa-lib if they are not already present on your system.
Run # alsaconf then and follow the steps through the configuration.
Now the important part: Add this line to your /etc/modprobe.conf
options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1
Now, make your sure your user is added to the group audio
# gpasswd -a user audio
You might want to reboot after the last three steps instead of manually loading all the modules now.
After rebooting, go in your konsole, log in as root and start # alsamixer.
Make sure your PCM, Master and Front channels are not muted (toggle with ‘m’).
BUT: your Analog L channels have to be muted!
I can not tell you why so, I just found it out via trial-and-error.
Your sound should now be working! If you still got some issues with your sound, check the very good Archlinux Wiki – ALSA page.
Thanks to fettouhi for sharing his solution at the archlinux forums!

After reading the following tutorial you should be able to update your linux system’s kernel offline. And all you need is a small USB stick or a CD.
I personally had to do it that way because I got a new laptop with an ethernet chipset which isn’t supported by the latest arch linux core-iso yet. So I had to update from 2.6.25 to 2.6.27 to get access to the internet.
I am going to explain my doing, as always, in a step-by-step order:

1.) Overview and Introduction
The notebook I decided to buy, after a long time of research and discussion, is: The Dell Latitude E4300

After first looking out for a 15″ notebook, I decided to rather get a 13″ ultra-portable one because of the big difference in portability. As a student, this was definitly a major for me and therefor a reason for going with the E4300.

hey folks, I just wanted to inform you what’s going on right now:
I just finished some of my tests at university so I do have some more free time again now. I will try to finish the full review about the Dell Latitude E4300, which is completed around 50% at this time, in the next days.
As you know, the last pieces of work, including inserting pictures and so on, need the most time, though.
Nevertheless I am still confident it will be done soon, so stay tuned~

Yes, I am finally a student at a german university now! – to be more detailed, the university of Ulm~
After I arrived here, in Mähringen (a small town around 2km off the campus), I immediatly moved into a student’s living community and furnished my room as fast as possible. Why such a hurry? Well my lectures were starting at monday morning so I really had only one day to manage all my moving to Ulm and make me able to live there.
When monday morning was there, I had to pack my stuff and go to university to enrol my self. After that was done, my first lectures began. If you are interested in what lectures I do have, check .. well.. this $%&!”§$ pc does not want to let me use my USB stick right now so I can’t upload my timetable right now, but it’s on my list..
Well anyway, I do have lectures like physics, chemistry, anatomy, human genetics,..
As far as I can tell for now, most of the professors are nice and friendly.
So in general, it was a quite good start considering the time pressure I had.
I will take some pictures of my room and the whole flat this weekend so I can probably upload them next week. Then, I will also upload some pics of my old room in Cottbus.
